What to wear for a TV interview? Guest Blog by Laura at Black Edge Style!

When you get the call to say you've been invited to attend an interview for the media opportunity of your DREAMS the first thing most people ask is "Oh my days, what on earth am I going to wear?"

Well, don't panic! We know how important it is that you show up in style, showing your creativity and passion for what you do!

At the moment things are slightly different as the majority of interviews are being conducted via video conference. This definitely makes things trickier. But you can still show your personality and flair via Zoom.

It's another extra to add to your to do list but don't fear it, embrace it! At Black Edge Style we know how important it is to show up in style and with confidence so here are our top tips!

1.       Don’t be complacent!

Spending a large proportion of our working days on video conferencing is now the new normal (I hate that saying but there you go I said it). We are all finding our groove and mastering the new way of working.  But this isn’t the time to be complacent.  Let's face - it first impressions are critical.

It's important to remember that at the interview you are showcasing your uniqueness, your passion for what you do, and your enthusiasm for the role you are applying for.

2. Stand out from the crowd!

Go for a smart dress code.  You don't have to wear a full suit - a smart top and trousers could be the perfect combination.

My go-to outfit suggestion would be this InWear Nira dress in black, which is sophisticated, stylish, and comfortable. An alternative could be to go big and bold and opt for the Inwear Zhen culotte in nautical blue teamed with the simple Inwear Rena t-shirt in black. Both of these will have viewers thinking that you are professional and worth listening to.

3. Do not, I repeat, do not wear your pyjama bottoms!

You never know if you will need to stand up on the call, whether it be an unexpected knock at the door or an ever-persistent dog you need to control in the background - they may even ask you for something you don't have to hand, meaning you need to nip away from the call.

Tracksuits or joggers are out - it shows a real lack of commitment if you only dress your top half.  My rule is simple – show up on the call, in the same manner you would if you were face to face - it's simple, it's respectful and it's important.

4. Don’t wear something distracting

A general rule is to avoid bold patterns and designs as they can be very distracting for others and can make a bad connection look even worse.

No low-cut tops ladies, it's very easy to have your camera angle slightly downwards and may attract unwanted attention.

5. Think about colours!

Don't be afraid to go bold with colour. This is your opportunity to show your personality - if you like to play about with colour and it makes you feel confident then go for it.

But consider how the colours will work with your background and the impression they will give.

Whatever outfit option you decide on, make sure you check yourself out in the mirror first and if possible do a test on camera to see how the colours show up - it will only take 2 minutes.

6.  Accessorize!

Another way of showing your unique style is with accessories. Check out the link to some bold and simple accessories options.  Depending on what outfit you opt for depends on what accessories I'd recommend.  If you're going for a monochrome smart professional look then team your outfit with some bold colourful studs like these Sharkie & Bear orange cork studs or add a pop of colour with a scarf, something like the Garcia White All Over Print Scarf.  If you've opted for a bright and colourful outfit keep the accessories simple - the Sharkie & Bear Blue Cork Studs are elegant and stylish.

My other outfit suggestions if you want to be more casual would be to try the b.Young Rizetta crop pants in black or the InWear Nabal skirt in black styled with the Garcia Spiced Orange t-shirt or the Garcia Yellow top.
Or for a more smart-casual approach why not try the InWear Nica No Rib Pants in black or if you prefer navy then the Kaffe Ronie Pants in midnight marine. Both trousers are smart, comfortable, relaxed fit and super stylish.  Teamed with a simple yet stylish top you can't go wrong, take a look at the Garcia Smoke Grey blouse or the InWear VOIW ink stroke shirt.

I wish you every success with your interview and all the luck for the future - be bold, be confident, and show up in style! And if you need any more help or guidance get in touch with me at Black Edge Style.
